ISTANBUL : The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Turkey on Friday night has risen to 44. The death toll from the quake has risen to 42, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a televised address. Two of the dead were from Greece.
The quake affected 800 people so far, according to the Turkish Disaster Management Office. According to the office, some people are still missing.
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook the Turkish city of Izmir on Friday. Search and rescue operations are underway in the area after the quake.
The quake affected neighboring countries as well. Hundreds of aftershocks were felt after the quake, according to locals.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan said that the search and rescue operation is underway and called on the public to help as much as possible.
