KATHMANDU: The United Nations has recommended that Nepal be upgraded to a developing country. The Association’s Committee for Development Policy has recommended upgrading to Nepal.
Nepal’s upgrade will be implemented from 2026. The committee had assessed per capita income, human capital index and economic and environmental risk indicators in the last five days.
If the committee decides to give a period of three years for upgrading from a least developed country to a developing country, this time the committee has decided to give five years of preparation time after Nepal requested more time due to COVID-19.
Nepal had met the minimum requirement for upgrading in 2015. But the government had decided not to upgrade immediately.
The committee has recommended upgrading to Nepal as well as Bangladesh.
